| Hull FC Away |
The Tigers bounced back from last weeks defeat in some style with an impressive victory over the previously unbeaten Hull FC at the KC Stadium with birthday boy Brent Sherwin snatching the points with a 77th minute drop goal. Terry Matterson made a couple of changes with Rangi Chase coming in to the starting line-up to partner Sherwin in the halves with Sione Faumuina moving in to the pack. Chris Feather also started with Craig Huby and Joe Westerman dropping back to the bench, where Liam Higgins earned a recall at the expense of Dean Widders. Cas kicked off and were behind after Hull's first set of six when a high kick by Chris Thorman caused a misunderstanding between Ryan McGoldrick and Kirk Dixon which saw Richard Horne pounce to score a try that Danny Tickle converted to give the home side an early advantage. Cas hit back with a try in the corner from Dixon after Sherwin's bomb had been spilled by full back Craig Hall. Chase regathered possession for the Tigers before sending the winger in. Dixon added the extras with the first of his 3 goals to level the scores. Both sides battled away in what turned out to be a tough encounter before Mark Calderwood beat Richard Owen to another Thorman kick. The ball fell to Graeme Horne who hacked on to score. Tickle was unable to convert in what proved to be a poor kicking display for the normally reliable 2nd row man. Crucially for the Tigers Dixon kicked a 100% 3 from 3. Neither side troubled the scoreboard before the break although Westerman appeared to be obstructed when chasing a Sherwin kick. French referee Thierry Alibert thought otherwise in what was an inconsistent display. Within 5 minutes of the restart Cas took the lead as a great charge from Huby set the position for McGoldrick to send Westerman in for a 4 pointer. Dixon's conversion gave the Tigers a 12-10 lead. FC started to turn the screw and a spell of pressure on the Cas line saw Graeme Horne go in for his 2nd try. Calderwood then went close and after being piggy backed upfield with 2 penalties Graeme Horne went in for his hat-trick. Tickle was off target with both conversions but the home side held a 6 point lead going into the final quarter of the game. Urged on by a travelling army the Tigers forced their way back into contention and levelled the scores when the outstanding McGoldrick's 'show n' go' caught the home defence napping and the popular Aussie crossed without a Hull hand being laid on him. Dixon's 3rd goal tied the game at 18-18 with only 14 minutes left on the clock. As both sides went in search of the winning play both Richard Horne and then Sherwin were off target with drop goal attempts but it was Cas who looked the stronger and when Sherwin's neat kicked was forced dead the home forwards looked out on their feet. From the resulting drop out the position was set for the match winning score as Sherwin bagged the one pointer to the delight of the Cas fans gathered in the North Stand. The final 3 minutes were long enough to provide a scare for the Tigers as Hull regained possession from the kick off but resolute defence saved the day and when the ball came loose on the last tackle Huby picked up and cleared the danger. A magnificent victory for Cas as they continued their 100% away record and the joy and spirit within the camp was evident by the jubilant scenes that followed the final hooter. The Tigers pack worked heriocally all night and set the platform for the win. Sargent, Chris Feather and Huby lead the way making lots of ground with ball in hand and were aided in defence by big efforts from Stuart Jones and Brett Ferres in the 2nd row. In the backs Sherwin dictated play, whilst Chase worked his socks off both in attack and defence. McGoldrick produced some good stuff and looked pretty safe at the back. Next up is a home game against the Bradford Bulls who have struggled early season but with a talented squad at their disposal it promises to be a tough encounter for the Tigers.
