Castleford Tigers Supporters Club

Youth Development performance evening

Tuesday 18th June

Signs and Designs Restaurant

Event kindly sponsored by Aysgarth Falls Hotel and Glasshus Facades

Special Guests, Darren Higgins – Head of youth performance.

Tony Smith - Under 19s Head Coach.

The evening got under way with a in depth and very interesting presentation from Darren Higgins about how the club run and operate the youth development department. From talent identification at 13 years of age through to under 19s and hopefully first team.

Training schedules, link to the first team squad and head coaches, the number of games and preseason training.

What we didn't know was the amount of staff involved, many volunteers, but also increasing full and part time staff, dealing with scouting of players, mental health, strength and conditioning, diet and nutrition, physiotherapy, player welfare, team managers, coaches and assistants.

The club have also formed a partnerships with Leeds Becket University, to cover Mental skills and Diet and Nutrition, Glasshus Facades who offer apprenticeships and offer study to BTEC level, for players following a career in rugby at U19 or community club level.

To help the players develop people skills the club also run activity days at the Prince of Wales hospice.

Many questions were asked from the audience, about education, scouting, mental health, duty of care for players who don't get signed on, injuries and attracting local and other players to the club.

We then had a break and we then got introduced to the guest players, Lewis Peachey – First team squad, Jake Sweeting – Under 19s, Taylor Cartwright – Under 19s, Jason Qareqare – Scholarship,Tom Hazelgrave – Scholarship and Will Shaw – Scholarship.

All the players gave us a brief account of place of birth, junior club, playing position and how the current season was progressing.

All the audience were very impressed in the way all the players conducted themselves, it is always difficult facing a room of people for the first time.

Tony Smith the U19s head coach had a few words,he expressed how proud he was of all the players and hoe rewarding it was to see all the players develop into better players and people.

A few more questions from the audience to the players and the event was over, everyone commented on how enjoyable it had been.

Many thanks to Darren,Tony, Lewis, Jake, Taylor, Jason, Tom and Will for attending and giving us a great night.

The event made £87.75, thanks to everyone who attended.
