The 12th CTSC awards night took place at a sold out George V WMC on Wednesday night, it was standing room only as we reviewed another good season, the Tigers finishing a really creditable 5th place. Injuries played a major part and the whole squad was really tested to the full, overall the Tigers played some outstanding rugby.
Highlights of the season, Denny Solomona's record breaking try haul, a brilliant effort, Luke Gale topped the charts for goals and total points, winning 5 out of 7 super 8s games, Unbeaten against Leeds and Wakefield, winning twice at Hull FC, winning at Catalan and a magic win at Newcastle against Warrington.
CEO Steve Gill gave his review of the season. Steve thanked everyone at the club, the players, coaching staff, directors and supporters for a another great season. An exclusive for the audience was the announcement that Rangi Chase had signed a 1 year deal, Rangi came up on stage to say a few words to a very happy audience.
Pete Riding was next on stage and he gave a review of the Under 19s season, announcing that the Tigers had a large number of players with great potential to make the first team squad and he was happy with next seasons squad. The first award of the night went to the Under 19s player of the year, sponsored by Faye's Sandwich bar, Faye Noon presented the award to Luis Johnson. Luis had a great season, joining us from Oulton Raiders on a 2nd year scholarship. Luis played in the friendly against Bradford at the start of the season.
The next award was the CTSC Committee player of the year, sponsored by the Black Swan, Normanton, the award was presented by Holly Bennett to the winner Luke Gale. This was the second year running that Luke had won this award, consistency of performance is the key for Luke, he also won the Albert Goldthorpe medal for the second consecutive year. Top of the charts for goals and points, picked again for the super league dream team. We all hope that Luke gets into the England squad, we strongly believe his form this season makes him one of the top half backs in the game.
Daryl Powell gave is review of the season, thanking the players for all their efforts in a season influenced by injuries. A good start to the season then injuries mounting up, a sticky middle of the season, then securing a top 8 place. Players playing out of position and the whole squad being used with mid season additions. Daryl was really proud of how the whole squad dug in and finished with a fantastic super 8s. With all the players back and fit for 2017 Daryl was positive of a better season pushing for the top 4 and trophies.
Next award was the Special Achievement award, sponsored by Carpet Magic, Kippax and presented by Steve Smith, this went to Luke Dorn for the second consecutive year. This year we were not only celebrating the record tries of 182 in 278 appearances for an overseas player in super league, but celebrating a wonderful career. Luke's highlights at Cas were the great people, Wembley 2014 and the winning try against Wigan in 2014, super league highlights was scoring 100 tries for London Broncos. Everyone in the room wished Luke and his family every success in the future and when he was back in the UK sometime in the future to come and have a drink with us.
