The dream of a brand new stadium for the Tigers is a step closer to reality.

Waystone, the company behind the award- winning Glasshoughton development, is to submit an outline planning application for a community stadium, together with a regional casino and an hotel at Glasshoughton (adjacent to Xscape) by Junction 32 of the M62.

The planning application will be submitted to Wakefield Metropolitan Borough Council early in the summer.

If the £200 million development goes ahead, it is expected to create 1,800 jobs and lead to four million visitors a year at Glasshoughton.

Stuart McLoughlin, managing director of Waystone, said: “We have drawn up plans for a community stadium at Glasshoughton. The community gave a very clear message, through the Urban Renaissance Initiative, that a new stadium for Cas Tigers was a top priority.

“It is envisaged that this stadium will have a capacity of 13,000, including 5,000 standing, and will play host to a number of community events like concerts, as well as being home for Castleford Tigers. The submission of the outline planning application will be a major step forward and we are confident that the will to secure a new stadium for Cas Tigers is there.”

Richard Wright, the chief executive of Castleford Tigers, said: “We’ve been working on our new stadium project for quite some time and now have the crucial parts to the project in place which are absolutely essential to our chances of success. First is our partnership with Waystone, second is the site, and third is the support of Wakefield Council.

The planning application is an essential first step. Waystone have done a fabulous job at Glasshoughton and we feel very good about working with them. We still have a great deal of work to do to turn the dreams into reality but all parties involved are committed to making it happen.

“We have seen the advancements made by Hull and Warrington following their moves into new stadiums and if we are to fulfil our high ambitions, then we need to follow suit and we feel our tremendous fans deserve nothing less.

“We also have a wider responsibility to the community and we see this as a community project rather than just for the club,” he added.

Stuart McLoughlin added: “It is too soon to put a timescale on this development, but we have made excellent progress in recent months, with regard to the ownership of the land and with addressing traffic issues.

“Clearly the development would be given a huge boost if we were able to build a regional casino at Glasshoughton. It is the perfect location for a casino and ticks all the right boxes,” he said. “Wakefield Council has already registered its interest in securing a regional casino at Glasshoughton.”

Owen Holder, associate with property consultants Knight Frank in Leeds, commented: “Glasshoughton is a fantastic location at the heart of the Yorkshire region and at the hub of its motorway network. Waystone has created a wonderful destination location and a community stadium would be a perfect addition to a very impressive development.”
