Castleford Tigers 44 - Warrington Wolves 24
Posted by stevieb on Tuesday, September 02 @ 14:13:31 BST (10 reads)
Castleford again made a mockery of their position at the foot of the engage Super League table by producing a stunning performance to see off Warrington at the Jungle.
Terry Matterson's side are all but certain to finish the season rooted to the bottom but have belied their standing on a number of occasions this season - and can now add the Wolves to their impressive list of scalps thanks to a 10-try show.
Bradford, Leeds and St Helens have all left West Yorkshire on the wrong end of the result this campaign - and after this defeat, Warrington's race with Wigan to secure fourth place will go down to the last weekend of the season.
The play-offs have rarely been in the equation for Castleford, but it did not show as they produced a fine first-half showing to lead 22-12 at the break.

TERRY’S MATCH PREVIEW
Posted by stevieb on Friday, August 08 @ 13:17:32 BST (86 reads)
The Tigers welcome back Kirk Dixon, Ned Catic and Scott Moore for Sundays clash with the Wakefield Wildcats at Belle Vue, after the trio missed last week’s game against Huddersfield with viral infections. Of the 17 who faced the Giants, all came through unscathed, with 16-year-old Joe Arundel, who made his Super League debut last weekend, dropping out of the squad.
Coach Terry Matterson said: “Last weekend against the Giants was a real disappointment. After having to re-shuffle things and with a few guys not 100% because of the virus that hit the camp, I was pleased with the effort we put in and at 60 minutes we were right in the game. Unfortunately those two yellow cards were to prove extremely costly, especially with one costing us a pivotal player at such a crucial time.
“Thankfully the guys who were ill have shaken off the virus so I have a few more options this weekend and there will likely be some changes, especially as there were no new injuries.
“One of the plus points from last week was the form of Mitchell Sargent who ideally might have benefited from another week to recover from his illness. Circumstances meant that we had to draft him in and I felt that he showed what a good signing he can be for the club.
“This week pits us against Wakefield once again and fans won’t need reminding that we are due for a win against our local rivals. But they were very disappointed last week after a heavy home defeat at the hands of St Helens and even though Saints are capable of scoring points against anyone in the competition, they will be seeing this as an opportunity to get back on track. We have got to look to stop that happening and I am hoping that the guys will be fired up to end a long run of defeats at the hands of the Wildcats. The defeat last week was a severe blow to our hopes of climbing off the foot of the table, but we still have a chance and I’m looking for us to fight until the very end.
The Tigers 19-man squad is –
LUKE DORN, STUART DONLAN, MICHAEL SHENTON, KIRK DIXON, MICHAEL WAINWRIGHT, BRENT SHERWIN, ANDREW HENDERSON, MICHAEL KORKIDAS, AWEN GUTTENBEIL, JOE WESTERMAN, LIAM HIGGINS, CRAIG HUBY, PETER LUPTON, RYAN BOYLE, SCOTT MOORE, RICHARD OWEN, RYAN McGOLDRICK, NED CATIC, MITCHELL SARGENT.

Castleford Tigers 14 - 40 Huddersfield Giants
Posted by stevieb on Friday, August 08 @ 13:11:29 BST (87 reads)
Half-back Chris Thorman scored 20 points as Huddersfield Giants finished with a flourish to secure back-to-back victories. Bottom side Castleford, ravaged by a sickness bug in midweek, were on terms at the interval in the engage Super League clash but rarely threatened in an error-strewn second period.
Thorman scored one try and kicked eight goals from nine attempts to inspire Huddersfield in a one-sided second half.
Kiwi Paul Whatuira scored after 74 minutes following a 90-metre break by full-back Leroy Cudjoe, prop Darrell Griffin charged over from close range, and in the final minute Thorman also went over to put the seal on a comprehensive win.
Two tries in three minutes had put Huddersfield in charge in the first period. Stephen Wild and Whatuira worked to move to put winger David Hodgson in at the corner for the 100th try of his career.

The Chase is over
Posted by stevieb on Friday, August 01 @ 14:05:06 BST (106 reads)
With the signed contract now in hand, the Tigers are delighted to be able to confirm the capture of the St George-Illawarra half back or hooker Rangi Chase.
The 22-year-old New Zealander began his NRL career with the Wests Tigers in 2006 but established himself in first grade after a switch to the Dragons saw him making 14 appearances in 2007. He has become a regular first grader this season and was a key player in the Dragons recent seven game unbeaten run.
Rangi, who received offers from two other Super League clubs, has represented the Kiwis at Junior and ‘A’ level and was in the train-on squad for the senior New Zealand side for the 2007 tour of England and France. He has signed a 2-year deal with the Tigers.
Tigers Head Coach Terry Matterson said: “I am really pleased to get Rangi on board. He is very quick, has good skills, is a hard worker and a strong defender. We intend to be strong in the pivotal positions next year and while we see Rangi playing primarily in the halves, he can also do an excellent job at hooker with his speed and passing game and his arrival increases our options.
“Rangi has had a tough upbringing and came through much adversity in his childhood. It is a credit to him that he has come through that, knuckled down and established himself as a regular in a top-six side in the NRL. We feel sure that he will be a big success here at the Jungle and a big favourite with the fans.”
The Tigers are currently awaiting confirmation of a second signing from the NRL and hope to be able to make an announcement very soon.
